'Ridgeway to Stile' submitted to Swire Ridgeway Arts Competition 2024

In April 2024, I submitted a painting called ‘Ridgeway to Stile’ into the Swire Ridgeway Arts Competition 2024. The theme for the year was ‘Signs and Symbols Along the Ridgeway’.

There were a huge number of submissions and diversity of mediums from paint, to collage, sculpture to photography and poetry. It was an honour to have work hanging among such talented artists.

Since I paint en plein air every Friday, (weather permitting) high up on the Ridgeway with a group of fellow committed artists, this was a great opportunity. The Ridgeway - the oldest road in Britain - with its stunning views and powerful atmosphere has always appealed to the creative spark in artists. It is a wonderful spot for cloud spotting!

Painting outdoors from life makes a difference. Your results may not be the paintings you imagine they should be or what you want them to be. But if you persevere and spend some time painting outdoors, you will have gained valuable information that cannot be found from looking at a photo”

Slowed down by a dodgy hip, I’d find a nice spot, with a coffee and pastel de nata in the morning, or a pint of Super Bock in the afternoon or early evening, and with my box of Yarka St Petersburg Watercolours and a small A6 Moleskin artbook would while away the time painting the views I saw.

Here are some of the paintings from my sketchbook. Quick paintings with a light touch.
